Items to avoid buying for someone you do not know well

Make sure you do not buy anything that is not acceptable or appropriate for the work environment.  Especially items that can be perceived as bias against age, race, sex, national origin, religion, disability or sexual orientation.  Also I would stay away from personal items such as toiletries, personal grooming items and clothes.  

Don't give into the temptation to buy lotions or perfumes, a lot of people have allergies which makes these bad gift ideas.  I have terrible allergies to certain perfumes so I would just end up giving it away.

Gift cards show that you didn't put much thought into the present and they leave no real impression.  Unless of course it is coupled with a thoughtful homemade item.
